Glossary
The LCD TV sets use the LCD technology for the display of the images. These TV’s are getting famous day by day for the efficiency they have and also due to the ultra thin models of such TV’s. Due to the commercial availability of such TV’s CRT Televisions are losing its market. These LCD TV’s are even wall mountable which makes the sale of LCD TV’s even stronger as they won’t occupy any spaces. Many organizations are into the manufacturing of LCD TV’s such as Samsung, Onida, and Videocon etc.
Some of the glossary items available with LCD TV’s are,
120Hz Refresh rate:
Most of the HDTV’s comes with this refresh rate which processes the video at 120 frames per second by adding few video frames or black frames in between.
3D TV:
Many LCD TV’s now has this capacity of providing 3D technology which gives a real viewing experience. This requires a special 3D glass called active shutter glass to view the videos.
Active shutter glasses:
The Active Shutter Glass is necessary for the LCD TVs which are 3D enabled. This Active shutter glasses are much more efficient than the traditional 3D glasses which are given in movie theatres.
Aspect Ratio:
Aspect ratio refers to the ratio of the width to the height of the display area in the screen. Example 16:9, 4:3 etc.
ATSC:
ATSC is the Advanced Television Standards Committee which was established to form technical standards for US digital TV system.
Bitrate:
Bitrate is the number of bits per second. It expresses the number of bits transmitted for the processing of data. The higher the bit rate, the higher is the data being processed.
Backlight scanning:
This is an anti blur technology used in LCD TV’s, typically these LCD TV’s use fluorescent backlight to shine constantly.
CableCARD:
This is a removable security card available from cable TV providers which allows only specific programmes and signals to be received. Many HD channels and programmes uses this technology.
Chrominance:
This is a color component of a video signal including the hue and saturation which is nothing but the shade and intensity respectively.
Contrast ratio:
Contrast Ratio is the ratio between the brightest white and darkest black on a LCD TV. The more the contrast ratio, the better a TV will be at showing subtle color. They are of two types static and dynamic.
Comb filter:
The comb filter removes the chrominance information from the luminance signal. This makes the images on screen crystal clear. The types of comb filter available in comb filter are Glass, 2 line, 3 line digital and 3D digital.
De-interlacing:
This is the process of converting the interlaced video signal to progressive scan signal. These are found in all LCD TV’s and progressive scan players.
Direct-view TV:
These are the term used to represent non projection types of TV such as LCD and flat panel TV’s.
Dolby Digital:
This is the official audio format for HDTV which is a discrete multichannel digital audio format usually associated with 5.1 channel surround sound.
Downconversion:
All the digital TV’s has a specific resolution for the display of the source has higher resolution then the capacity of the TV then it will down convert the source to match its resolution. This is called down conversion.
Electronic program guide:
Electronic Program guide which is abbreviated as EPG provides the detail listing of all the services and programs available for a extended time period. This facility is available in Set top Boxes and other HD providing technologies.
Ethernet port:
An Ethernet port on the LCD TV enables a connection of the TV to the Internet or any other home network.
Energy Star:
Energy star is a program established by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which was formally launched on June 17, 1993. According to this program a monitor should consume less than 30 W of power in its low power state.
Frame Rate:
Frame Rate is the number of frames that can be displayed on the TV.
Ghosting or Smearing:
This Ghosting or smearing is the duplicate image which is left behind on the LCD screens on displaying fast moving images. A faster response time helps to eliminate this ghosting.
HDMI:
HDMI is the High-Definition Multimedia Interface which is a multi pin interface for the transfer of uncompressed video with HDCP protection
HDTV:
HDTV is the High Definition Television in which nowadays most of the LCD monitors comes. A HDTV must be able to display 720 vertical scanning lines in progressive (720p) or 1080 vertical scanning lines in interlaced mode (1080i).
LCD:
LCD is the Liquid Crystal Display which is a display element consisting of a matrix of liquid crystal elements.
LED TV:
LED TV provides much more crystal clear picture than the conventional LCD TV. They use LED backlight instead of fluorescent one.
Luminance:
Luminance is the black and whote component of the picture which determines the level of picture detail.
MPEG:
MPEG is the Moving Picture Experts Group which is a encoding standard developed for the encoding and compression of videos and audio. They have two versions, MPEG 2 and MPEG 4.
Pixel:
Pixel can be defined as the smallest visible display element of the LCD.
Plasma:
Plasma is a technology for the manufacturing of flat panel LCD TV’s which consists of 2 layers of transparent glass panels with a thin layer of pixels sandwiched between them.
Samsung:
Samsung, one of the leading manufacturers of electronic gadgets. They also manufacture the LCD TV’s. They have a wide range of LCD TV’s mentioned with series and the latest one being series 7 which is a LED TV.
Scan Rate:
Scan Rate is the speed with which a single horizontal line is drawn on the screen. This scan rate is measured in kHz.
Viewing Angles:
It represents the horizontal and vertical angles by which the screen can be viewed without any loss of fidelity.
Widescreen:
The widescreen represents a aspect ratio of 16:9 which is the optimum ratio for HD podcasts and videos.
